78th Festival Review
The Old Oakhamian Lodge No. 8033 was proud to host the 2026 meeting of the Federation of School Lodges at Oakham School on Saturday 15th August. Brethren from across the country gathered in Rutland for a day of friendship, heritage, and shared school‑lodge tradition.
On this occasion we were blessed by the presence of the Assistant Grand Master Arthur Stephen Varley and the Past Assistant Grand Master Sir David Hugh Wootton along with a host of other dignitaries.
The meeting opened in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, where visitors were welcomed by the Worshipful Master (Jack Soars) and members of the Lodge. A short presentation highlighted the 442year old History of the School given by Aurore Guillimot-Bonneford (School Archivist) and the ‘History of Masonry in Rutland’ given by Peter Hems.
Throughout the day, guests enjoyed the exceptional hospitality of the Old Oakhamian Lodge. Displays included the Lodge’s Challenge 60 initiative, showcasing summonses from visits to sixty new Lodges and Chapters undertaken between the 2025 and 2026 Installations. The collection was exhibited in the Small Barraclough Dining Hall and proved a popular talking point among attendees. Photos from the archives were also displayed capturing each member of the lodge from their time at the school.
The event concluded with a well‑attended festive board, where brethren and partners from many school‑linked Lodges shared stories, strengthened connections, and celebrated the values that unite the Federation.
The Province of Leicestershire & Rutland extends its thanks to the Old Oakhamian Lodge for delivering a warm, well‑organised, and memorable gathering. The Federation of School Lodges also expressed its appreciation for the excellent venue, superb hospitality, and the spirit of fellowship that defined the day. A £500 cheque was presented to Mrs Samantha Rowntree, Director of Development and Engagement, which will be used to buy a bench for the sports field.
